The beauty of reading a high-level mystery novel is its ability to masterfully misdirect your suspicions of the (often deadly) culprit. Chapter by chapter, you’re unconsciously led to believe any given character could be the guilty party as the author deftly weaves the threads of mistrust. And it’s those false trails that make the ultimate pay off at the novel’s conclusion that much more satisfying.

To honor these types of works, and their brilliant authors, we’ve compiled a list of top-tier mystery novels in which everyone is a suspect. So, sit back, relax, and commence the whodunit guessing game. We’ll see you on the other side.

The Other Mothers
by Katherine Faulkner

Let’s hit the ground running with a novel that finds a group of young mothers as the prime suspects in the supposed drowning of a twenty-one-year-old nanny named Sophie. Katherine Faulkner’s THE OTHER MOTHERS follows freelance journalist Natasha Carpenter as she investigates the case. Juggling parenthood at the same time, Tash enrolls her son in a playgroup and meets a trio of wealthy mothers that spend their time enjoying the finer things. Tash is happy to play along until she suddenly begins receiving death threats about her investigative reporting. She can’t help but think her new “friends” may somehow be involved, and her investigation soon turns toward the other mothers—each eliciting their own suspicions. Jumping back and forth between the perspectives of a paranoid Tash and Sophie in the period before her death, readers navigate a psychological thriller that will leave you out of breath right up until its epic conclusion.

The Other Mothers
Katherine Faulkner

The author of the “twisty, fast-paced” (The Sunday Times, London) Greenwich Park returns with a fresh and deftly paced thriller about murder, class, and motherhood in an exclusive London community.

When a young nanny is found dead in mysterious circumstances, new mom, Tash, is intrigued. She has been searching for a story to launch her career as a freelance journalist. But she has also been searching for something else—new friends to help her navigate motherhood.

She sees them at her son’s new playgroup. The other mothers. A group of sleek, sophisticated women who live in a neighborhood of tree-lined avenues and stunning houses. The sort of mothers Tash herself would like to be. When the mothers welcome her into their circle, Tash discovers the kind of life she has always dreamt of—their elegant London townhouses a far cry from her cramped basement flat and endless bills. She is quickly swept up into their wealthy world via coffees, cocktails, and playdates.

But when another young woman is found dead, it’s clear there’s much more to the community than meets the eye. The more Tash investigates, the more she’s led uncomfortably close to the other mothers. Are these women really her friends? Or is there another, more dangerous reason why she has been so quickly accepted into their exclusive world? Who, exactly, is investigating who?

The It Girl
by Ruth Ware

Few do captivating mysteries better than Ruth Ware and her book THE IT GIRL proves that. The story begins by introducing us to Hannah Jones and April Clark-Cliveden, roommates at Oxford University. While polar opposites, the two become fast friends and cultivate a close group at school, including April’s boyfriend, Will. But when April is found dead via strangulation, Hannah is sent reeling. Her only comfort comes when the supposed killer, John Neville, is convicted and sentenced. Ten years later, Hannah and Will are now married, John has died in prison, and a young journalist finds evidence that may exonerate John. Hannah is then forced to reconnect with her college friends in an effort to find out what really happened. As she digs, she begins to suspect that each in the group, including her husband, may be misrepresenting the truth to avert any suspicion. In true Ware fashion, the novel brings each character to life as we witness Hannah piece together one fateful night a decade earlier to solve a mystery.

The It Girl
Ruth Ware

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the “claustrophobic spine-tingler” (People) One by One returns with an unputdownable mystery following a woman on the search for answers a decade after her friend’s murder.

April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford.

Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead.

Now, a decade later, Hannah and Will are expecting their first child, and the man convicted of killing April, former Oxford porter John Neville, has died in prison. Relieved to have finally put the past behind her, Hannah’s world is rocked when a young journalist comes knocking and presents new evidence that Neville may have been innocent. As Hannah reconnects with old friends and delves deeper into the mystery of April’s death, she realizes that the friends she thought she knew all have something to hide…including a murder.

“The Agatha Christie of our generation” (David Baldacci, #1 New York Times bestselling author) proves once again that she is “as ingenious and indefatigable as the Queen of Crime” (The Washington Post) with this propulsive murder mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

An Unwanted Guest
by Shari Lapena

A classic whodunit, AN UNWANTED GUEST by Shari Lapena takes place in the Catskills, where a winter storm has just cut off power to Mitchell’s Inn. As the guests prepare to ride out the storm, an accident occurs: Dana Hart falls down the grand staircase and is killed. Though lawyer David Paley doesn’t believe it to be an accident, and without the ability to call the police, he decides to take it upon himself to try to figure out what really happened. We quickly find that there is a fair share of suspicious persons at the inn, and the group is quickly gripped by paranoia as more and more secrets are revealed. Even worse, other guests are dying in even stranger ways. Lapena’s characters are far from likable, and each seem capable of executing these terrible acts, making the story that much more interesting. Only time will tell if the group can survive the storm and identify the true culprit before it’s too late, but either way, you’ll be thoroughly entertained.

The Other Black Girl
by Zakiya Dalila Harris

In her debut novel, THE OTHER BLACK GIRL, Zakiya Dalila Harris tells the story of Nella Rogers, an editorial assistant at Wagner Books and the only Black person on staff. That is, until Hazel-May McCall arrives. The two quickly hit it off, and Nella is relieved to finally have someone to confide in about the office’s racial politics. But before long, Nella finds herself being looked over by the publishing house’s editors in favor of Hazel. She can’t help but think it has to do with Hazel’s background—born in Harlem, daughter of civil rights activists, grandfather who died protesting—which seems to resonate more than Nella’s suburban upbringing. To make matters worse, Nella soon finds a note on her desk that reads “Leave Wagner Now,” which leads to her searching for author of the threat. With suspects everywhere she looks, Nella soon uncovers a conspiracy that she could’ve never imagined. Part social satire, part thriller, THE OTHER BLACK GIRL is the perfect page-turner to keep you guessing.

The Other Black Girl
Zakiya Dalila Harris

“Riveting, fearless, and vividly original” (Emily St. John Mandel, New York Times bestselling author), this instant New York Times bestseller explores the tension that unfurls when two young Black women meet against the starkly white backdrop of New York City book publishing.

Twenty-six-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black employee at Wagner Books. Fed up with the isolation and microaggressions, she’s thrilled when Harlem-born and bred Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They’ve only just started comparing natural hair care regimens, though, when a string of uncomfortable events elevates Hazel to Office Darling, and Nella is left in the dust.

Then the notes begin to appear on Nella’s desk: LEAVE WAGNER. NOW.

It’s hard to believe Hazel is behind these hostile messages. But as Nella starts to spiral and obsess over the sinister forces at play, she soon realizes that there’s a lot more at stake than just her career. Having joined Wagner Books to honor the legacy of Burning Heart, a novel written and edited by two Black women, she had thought that this animosity was a relic of the past. Is Nella ready to take on the fight of a new generation?

“Poignant, daring, and darkly funny, The Other Black Girl will have you stressed and exhilarated in equal measure through the very last twist” (Vulture). The perfect read for anyone who has ever felt manipulated, threatened, or overlooked in the workplace.

The Plot meets Please Join Us in this psychological suspense debut about a young author at an exclusive writer’s retreat that descends into a nightmare.

Alex has all but given up on her dreams of becoming a published author when she receives a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: attend an exclusive, month-long writing retreat at the estate of feminist horror writer Roza Vallo. Even the knowledge that Wren, her former best friend and current rival, is attending doesn’t dampen her excitement.

But when the attendees arrive, Roza drops a bombshell—they must all complete an entire novel from scratch during the next month, and the author of the best one will receive a life-changing seven-figure publishing deal. Determined to win this seemingly impossible contest, Alex buckles down and tries to ignore the strange happenings at the estate, including Roza’s erratic behavior, Wren’s cruel mind games, and the alleged haunting of the mansion itself. But when one of the writers vanishes during a snowstorm, Alex realizes that something very sinister is afoot. With the clock running out, she’s desperate to discover the truth and save herself.
