Share 6 Popular Library Books and What to Read While You Wait

This one is for my fellow library enthusiasts, mood readers, and hyper-fixation-prone folks. I don’t know about you, but when I feel like reading a particular book, I want to read it NOW. If a friend shares an enticing recommendation, I want to read it NOW. If I hear about an absolute winner on BookTok—you guessed it!—I want to read it NOW. Unfortunately, this predisposition to impatience often conflicts with my library-first approach to reading. I’ll set my heart on a certain book only to find that all 200 digital, physical, and audio copies from my local library are spoken for, and I’ve got weeks to wait before it’s my turn.

In lieu of a top-notch cryfest over my Libby app, I often find myself on the hunt for books with the same vibes as the one I’m waiting around for, but without the “waiting around” part. So, if you’re anything like me and simply cannot wait to read as your mood instructs, this list is for you!

Dear Mrs. Bird
by AJ Pearce

If you’re waiting for LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY by Bonnie Garmus, you’re probably in the mood for something empowering. Perhaps you’re specifically interested in a period piece set in the mid-1900s that features strong, plucky female characters who you can’t help but root for.

Look no further than DEAR MRS. BIRD by AJ Pearce, which tells the story of Emmeline Lake, an effervescent young woman navigating the challenges of wartime London with her best friend, Bunty. With hopes of becoming a Lady War Correspondent, Emmy eagerly takes a job at a women’s magazine, only to find herself answering advice letters under the stern watch of Henrietta Bird. Despite Mrs. Bird’s insistence on dismissing any letters from women writing of “unpleasantness,” Emmy secretly responds to readers who reach out with their wartime troubles. This beautifully crafted story captures the courage, upheaval, and resilience of the home front, blending humor with poignant, heart-wrenching moments. A delightful mix of warmth, wit, and wisdom, this book is a treasure that left me wanting more (and is the first book in the equally wonderful Emmy Lake Chronicles). I highly recommend it for those seeking an uplifting story that resonates with resilience and hope in challenging times.

Lady Tan's Circle of Women
by Lisa See

If you’re waiting for THE COVENANT OF WATER by Abraham Verghese, I’m with you; Oprah’s Book Club picks are not good for the limited forbearance I’m capable of! But, luckily I found another novel to scratch the itch for a work of historical fiction with themes of cultural traditions, generational change, and medical history woven throughout.

That book is LADY TAN’S CIRCLE OF WOMEN by Lisa See, and it has become a new favorite of mine. The story takes us back to 15th-century China and into the life of Tan Yunxian, a remarkable woman raised by her grandparents to be of use. With her grandmother's guidance, Yunxian learns about women's health and finds a lifelong friend in Meiling, a midwife-in-training. Together, they navigate the challenges of their time, particularly for women. Despite an arranged marriage and societal expectations, Yunxian strives to help women and girls in her community as one of the few female doctors in China. Lisa See crafts a novel that's both historically rich and emotionally resonant, exploring women's rights and the beauty that can bloom from adversity. It's an unforgettable journey through history, based on a real figure, that I can’t recommend enough.

Lady Tan's Circle of Women
Lisa See

The latest historical novel from New York Times bestselling author Lisa See, inspired by the true story of a woman physician from 15th-century China—perfect for fans of See’s classic Snowflower and the Secret Fan and The Island of Sea Women.

According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.

From a young age, Yunxian learns about women’s illnesses, many of which relate to childbearing, alongside a young midwife-in-training, Meiling. The two girls find fast friendship and a mutual purpose—despite the prohibition that a doctor should never touch blood while a midwife comes in frequent contact with it—and they vow to be forever friends, sharing in each other’s joys and struggles. No mud, no lotus, they tell themselves: from adversity beauty can bloom.

But when Yunxian is sent into an arranged marriage, her mother-in-law forbids her from seeing Meiling and from helping the women and girls in the household. Yunxian is to act like a proper wife—embroider bound-foot slippers, pluck instruments, recite poetry, give birth to sons, and stay forever within the walls of the family compound, the Garden of Fragrant Delights.

How might a woman like Yunxian break free of these traditions, go on to treat women and girls from every level of society, and lead a life of such importance that many of her remedies are still used five centuries later? How might the power of friendship support or complicate these efforts? Lady Tan’s Circle of Women is a captivating story of women helping other women. It is also a triumphant reimagining of the life of a woman who was remarkable in the Ming dynasty and would be considered remarkable today.

The Other Black Girl
by Zakiya Dalila Harris

If you’re waiting for YELLOWFACE by R.F. Kuang, you may be looking to read a story that offers social commentary on the book publishing industry while tackling important topics like racism within the framework of a unique premise.

THE OTHER BLACK GIRL by Zakiya Dalila Harris is a gripping exploration of workplace dynamics, race, and manipulation that had me on the edge of my seat. It tells the story of Nella Rogers, who is the only Black employee at publisher Wagner Books until Hazel joins the team. Soon after, a series of unsettling events make Nella question the motives behind Hazel's actions and who she can trust. As the tension escalates, she realizes there's more at stake than just her career. The book is a genre-bending masterpiece that weaves elements of contemporary drama, mystery, thriller, and horror into an enthralling narrative. With its slow-burn pacing, the story builds on office politics and microaggressions, gradually revealing the sinister forces at play. I highly recommend this novel to readers who enjoy dark reads, clever twists, and multi-layered characters. Believe me when I say you’ll finish this one with your jaw on the floor.

The Other Black Girl
Zakiya Dalila Harris

“Riveting, fearless, and vividly original” (Emily St. John Mandel, New York Times bestselling author), this instant New York Times bestseller explores the tension that unfurls when two young Black women meet against the starkly white backdrop of New York City book publishing.

Twenty-six-year-old editorial assistant Nella Rogers is tired of being the only Black employee at Wagner Books. Fed up with the isolation and microaggressions, she’s thrilled when Harlem-born and bred Hazel starts working in the cubicle beside hers. They’ve only just started comparing natural hair care regimens, though, when a string of uncomfortable events elevates Hazel to Office Darling, and Nella is left in the dust.

Then the notes begin to appear on Nella’s desk: LEAVE WAGNER. NOW.

It’s hard to believe Hazel is behind these hostile messages. But as Nella starts to spiral and obsess over the sinister forces at play, she soon realizes that there’s a lot more at stake than just her career. Having joined Wagner Books to honor the legacy of Burning Heart, a novel written and edited by two Black women, she had thought that this animosity was a relic of the past. Is Nella ready to take on the fight of a new generation?

“Poignant, daring, and darkly funny, The Other Black Girl will have you stressed and exhilarated in equal measure through the very last twist” (Vulture). The perfect read for anyone who has ever felt manipulated, threatened, or overlooked in the workplace.

Shark Heart
by Emily Habeck

If you’re waiting for REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES by Shelby Van Pelt, I’ll bet you’re searching for a story that will catch you off guard. It needs to be a tale of transformation, connection, and grief, all told in an unconventional way.

If I’ve hit the mark, then you’ll want to grab your copy of SHARK HEART as soon as humanly possible. Emily Habeck’s debut novel centers around Lewis and Wren, newlyweds whose bliss is shattered when Lewis is diagnosed with a condition that will slowly transform him into a great white shark—physically and instinctually—while his human mind remains intact. As Lewis grapples with his impending metamorphosis and unfulfilled dreams, Wren is forced to confront her own tumultuous past. This vivid and imaginative novel explores love, memory, and finding joy in the face of grief. It’s a heartfelt, lyrical, and beautifully composed story, unlike anything I’ve ever read. Fair warning though: you may want your box of tissues ready for this one!

Shark Heart
Emily Habeck

A gorgeous debut novel of marriage, motherhood, metamorphosis, and letting go, this intergenerational love story begins with newlyweds Wren and her husband, Lewis—a man who, over the course of nine months, transforms into a great white shark.

For Lewis and Wren, their first year of marriage is also their last. A few weeks after their wedding, Lewis receives a rare diagnosis. He will retain most of his consciousness, memories, and intellect, but his physical body will gradually turn into a great white shark. As Lewis develops the features and impulses of one of the most predatory creatures in the ocean, his complicated artist’s heart struggles to make peace with his unfulfilled dreams.

At first, Wren internally resists her husband’s fate. Is there a way for them to be together after Lewis changes? Then, a glimpse of Lewis’s developing carnivorous nature activates long-repressed memories for Wren, whose story vacillates between her childhood living on a houseboat in Oklahoma, her time with a college ex-girlfriend, and her unusual friendship with a woman pregnant with twin birds. Woven throughout this bold novel is the story of Wren’s mother, Angela, who becomes pregnant with Wren at fifteen in an abusive relationship amidst her parents’ crumbling marriage. In the present, all of Wren’s grief eventually collides, and she is forced to make an impossible choice.

A sweeping love story that is at once lyrical and funny, airy and visceral, Shark Heart is an unforgettable, gorgeous novel about life’s perennial questions, the fragility of memories, finding joy amidst grief, and creating a meaningful life. This daring debut marks the arrival of a wildly talented new writer abounding with originality, humor, and heart.

The East Indian
by Brinda Charry

If you’re waiting for DEMON COPPERHEAD by Barbara Kingsolver, then you’re not alone. I think we’re all waiting on this one, which means that it’s not likely to be available anytime soon. In the meantime, you may want to check out another tale of adversity, cultural isolation, and identity that invokes previous works of literature in a historical setting.

THE EAST INDIAN, an exhilarating debut novel by Brinda Charry, introduces us to Tony, the first native of the Indian subcontinent to set foot in Colonial America. Kidnapped and transported from the Coromandel Coast to London and then to Jamestown, Virginia, Tony finds himself an indentured servant working the tobacco plantations alongside others who share his fate. The young protagonist, orphaned and scared, initially longs for home but eventually adapts to his new surroundings. He dreams of becoming a medicine man or physician's assistant, mastering the use of roots and herbs to heal. Like the play that captivates him—Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream—Tony’s life is rich with oddities and hijinks, humor, and tragedy. Through his compelling journey, Charry brings to life the struggles and triumphs of an unknown figure during the early days of English colonization. It’s an unputdownable read perfect for your next book club pick.

The East Indian
Brinda Charry

Inspired by a historical figure, an exhilarating debut novel about the first native of the Indian subcontinent to arrive in Colonial America—for readers of Esi Edugyan and Yaa Gyasi.

Meet Tony: insatiably curious, deeply compassionate, with a unique perspective on every scene he encounters. Kidnapped and transported to the New World after traveling from the British East India Company’s outpost on the Coromandel Coast to the teeming streets of London, young Tony finds himself in Jamestown, Virginia, where he and his fellow indentured servants—boys like himself, men from Africa, a mad woman from London—must work the tobacco plantations. Orphaned and afraid, Tony initially longs for home. But as he adjusts to his new environment, finding companionship and even love, he can envision a life for himself after servitude. His dream: to become a medicine man, or a physician’s assistant, an expert on roots and herbs, a dispenser of healing compounds.

Like the play that captivates him—Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream—Tony’s life is rich with oddities and hijinks, humor and tragedy. Set during the early days of English colonization in Jamestown, before servitude calcified into racialized slavery, The East Indian gives authentic voice to an otherwise unknown historic figure and brings the world he would have encountered to vivid life. In this coming-of-age tale, narrated by a most memorable literary rascal, Charry conjures a young character sure to be beloved by readers for years to come.
