Losing myself in a love story is one of my favorite things to do, so this summer my to-be-read list is full of all kinds of romances. With everything from heartwarming stories that might make me cry to fun and lighthearted ones that will put a smile on my face, these books are bound to be some of my favorite love stories of the year.

And this summer is a particularly special one for Simon & Schuster as they launch their Black Love Summer campaign! This campaign brings together three Black romance novels that feature Black Love at its best—dreamy, angsty, and real! Plus, beginning June 7th, they’ve teamed up with the BLK dating app to provide exclusive content with the authors, in-app extras, and more! (Curious? You can learn more here!) And now, onto my summer romance picks…

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty
by Akwaeke Emezi

If you took the page-turning tension of IN FIVE YEARS, combined it with the complex family dynamics of CRAZY RICH ASIANS, and added a little of the relatable charm of NORMAL PEOPLE, you’d get YOU MADE A FOOL OF DEATH WITH YOUR BEAUTY, the newest breathtaking story about love after loss, from Akwaeke Emezi. The story follows Feyi, an artist who lost the love of her life when her husband died five years ago, as she experiences love and a new relationship that leaves her looking for answers she may never have. I know this one will make me cry, but I cannot wait for it to break my heart and then put it back together.

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty
Akwaeke Emezi

A New York Times bestselling author, National Book Award finalist, and “one of our greatest living writers” (Shondaland) reimagines the love story in this fresh and seductive novel about a young woman seeking joy while healing from loss.

Feyi Adekola wants to learn how to be alive again.

It’s been five years since the accident that killed the love of her life and she’s almost a new person now—an artist with her own studio, and sharing a brownstone apartment with her ride-or-die best friend, Joy, who insists it’s time for Feyi to ease back into the dating scene. Feyi isn’t ready for anything serious, but a steamy encounter at a rooftop party cascades into a whirlwind summer she could have never imagined: a luxury trip to a tropical island, decadent meals in the glamorous home of a celebrity chef, and a major curator who wants to launch her art career.

She’s even started dating the perfect guy, but their new relationship might be sabotaged before it has a chance by the dangerous thrill Feyi feels every time she locks eyes with the one person in the house who is most definitely off-limits. This new life she asked for just got a lot more complicated, and Feyi must begin her search for real answers. Who is she ready to become? Can she release her past and honor her grief while still embracing her future? And, of course, there’s the biggest question of all—how far is she willing to go for a second chance at love?

Akwaeke Emezi’s vivid and passionate writing takes us deep into a world of possibility and healing, and the constant bravery of choosing love against all odds.

For All Time
by Shanna Miles

Imagine living a thousand lives and trying over and over again to fix your fate and finally live happily ever after with the person you love. In FOR ALL TIME, Tamar and Fayard have lived through civil wars and revolutions, trying to fight for each other, but they have never made it far enough to arrive at the end of their story. Reading about this book reminded me so much of the show Outlander and the way it weaves through time, and I know I will love the journey it takes to finally see Tamar and Fayard find each other again and what it takes to finally be together.

Good Morning, Love
by Ashley M. Coleman

What’s my idea of the perfect summer read? A romantic comedy. In GOOD MORNING, LOVE, Carlisa “Carli” Henton is a burgeoning songwriter whose world is turned upside down when she runs into Tau Anderson, a music star on the rise. While Carli’s always had a clear line between work and her personal life, this chance encounter with a charming man has the power to change everything. Plus, who doesn’t want a glimpse into the New York music scene?

Good Morning, Love
Ashley M. Coleman

For fans of My (Not So) Perfect Life and Jasmine Guillory’s While We Were Dating, a disarmingly fun debut novel follows Carlisa Henton as her life comes undone after a chance meeting with a rising pop star.

Carlisa “Carli” Henton is a musician and songwriter hoping to follow in her father’s musical footsteps. But, biding her time until she makes it big in the music industry, she works as a junior account manager at a big-name media company to cover her New York City rent. Carli meticulously balances her work with her musical endeavors as a songwriter—until a chance meeting with rising star Tau Anderson sends her calculated world into a frenzy. Their worlds collide and quickly blur the strict lines Carli has drawn between her business and her personal life, throwing Carli’s reputation—and her burgeoning songwriting career—into question.

A smart, timely, energizing romance, Good Morning, Love shows us what the glamorous New York’s music scene is really like and takes us into the lives of a rising but somewhat troubled R&B star and a promising protégé who knows her job better than she knows herself.

With fresh and honest prose, Good Morning, Love examines the uncertainty of being a new professional looking to chase a dream while also trying to survive in a world that’s not always kind to ambitious women.

Love Radio
by Ebony LaDelle

I’m a sucker for a warm and fuzzy YA Romance, so LOVE RADIO was an immediate addition to my Summer TBR list. This debut novel by Ebony LaDelle follows the story of Prince Jones, a teenage radio host who has a segment at a popular Detroit radio station where he doles out relationship advice, and Dani Ford, a girl who has put aside all things romance to follow her step-by-step plan to become an author. But when she hits a bump in her plan and the self-professed love doctor claims he can woo Dani and make her fall in love with him after only three dates, the pair go off on a journey that surprises them both.

Love Radio
Ebony LaDelle

Hitch meets The Sun Is Also a Star in this witty and romantic teen novel about a self-professed teen love doctor with a popular radio segment who believes he can get a girl who hates all things romance to fall in love with him in only three dates.

Prince Jones is the guy with all the answers—or so it seems. After all, at seventeen, he has his own segment on Detroit’s popular hip-hop show, Love Radio, where he dishes out advice to the brokenhearted.

Prince has always dreamed of becoming a DJ and falling in love. But being the main caretaker for his mother, who has multiple sclerosis, and his little brother means his dreams will stay just that and the only romances in his life are the ones he hears about from his listeners.

Until he meets Dani Ford.

Dani isn’t checking for anybody. She’s focused on her plan: ace senior year, score a scholarship, and move to New York City to become a famous author. But her college essay keeps tripping her up and acknowledging what’s blocking her means dealing with what happened at that party a few months ago.

And that’s one thing Dani can’t do.

When the romantic DJ meets the ambitious writer, sparks fly. Prince is smitten, but Dani’s not looking to get derailed. She gives Prince just three dates to convince her that he’s worth falling for.

Three dates for the love expert to take his own advice, and just maybe change two lives forever.
